We get this question all the time:

“If cannabis is legal in Minnesota, why can’t I just use my credit card?”

The answer comes down to the difference between state law and federal law.

Minnesota law allows licensed cannabis retailers to legally sell adult-use cannabis. However, cannabis remains illegal under federal law and is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance under the federal Controlled Substances Act.

Because cannabis remains federally illegal, traditional credit-card networks and financial institutions cannot process cannabis purchases the same way they process ordinary retail transactions.

So unfortunately, this isn’t a policy that Lake Superior Dispensary gets to choose.

We cannot accept traditional credit cards for cannabis purchases.

We recently added debit-card payments, so you no longer have to rely solely on cash when shopping with us.

Our debit-card system is still relatively new, so if you haven’t heard about it yet, yes — you can now pay with your debit card at Lake Superior Dispensary!

We know payment restrictions can be frustrating, but they are a result of the ongoing conflict between Minnesota’s legal cannabis market and federal cannabis law, not a restriction we created.

We get it — delivery would be convenient!

But there’s an important distinction when it comes to Minnesota cannabis law:

A standard cannabis retail license does not authorize a dispensary to deliver cannabis to customers.

Minnesota has a separate cannabis delivery service license specifically for businesses authorized to transport and deliver cannabis to customers.

As a recreational cannabis retailer, Lake Superior Dispensary is not authorized to provide delivery under our retail license.

So when you see “No Delivery” listed as an area to improve, that’s not simply a business decision we’re making to inconvenience our customers.

It’s a licensing and regulatory issue.

We take compliance seriously and will always operate within the rules established by the Minnesota Office of Cannabis Management.

For now, the best way to shop with us is to visit Lake Superior Dispensary in person.
